Schema markup is structured information that describes content on a webpage. It can help systems interpret a business, article or other supported item. It is not a shortcut to a guaranteed ranking, an AI recommendation or a special search display.

Start with the visible page

Before adding markup, make sure the page itself is accurate. If your contact page says you are based in Pontiac and serve Oakland County, the markup should not invent offices in Troy, Birmingham or West Bloomfield. If an article has an author and publication date, those details should describe the actual article.

Google’s structured data guidelines require markup to represent the page and prohibit misleading content. Passing a syntax test does not guarantee eligibility for a search feature or its appearance.

Find out what your website already generates

WordPress themes, SEO plugins and custom snippets can each produce structured data. Adding another generator without checking the existing output can create competing descriptions of the same business. Ask which component owns the organization information and how article pages connect to it.

Inspect a few representative pages rather than assuming every page uses the same setup. A homepage, a service page and a blog post may each need a different description. Keep the source of each important field documented so future changes happen in the correct place.

Prioritize factual fields over decorative additions

A sensible review checks the business name, website URL, public contact information and relationships between the website, publisher and article. Add only properties that fit the business and are supported by real information.

Distinguish validation from search results

Validation answers a limited question: whether the markup can be interpreted and whether detected items meet the tested requirements. It does not demonstrate that Google will show a rich result, that another search system uses the field or that an AI answer will cite the page.

Use the relevant testing tools after a change and review the rendered page too. A technically valid description of outdated services is still a business problem. Save the previous configuration so a mistaken change can be reversed.

Keep useful FAQs even without a display promise

Questions and answers can help visitors understand scope, ownership and next steps. Write them because customers need the answers. Search features change, so do not justify an FAQ section solely with a promise that it will produce a special result layout.

The same principle applies to AI search. Clear content and accurate business facts are worthwhile on their own. A markup package should be evaluated by the actual work and verification included, not by an unsupported claim that it makes every AI tool recommend the business.

A practical review request

Ask your provider for the current markup sources, any conflicting business facts, the proposed correction and the validation result. That makes the work concrete and reviewable. DH Digital Design can discuss this as part of a broader website SEO review.

Continue with consistent business information and writing clearer service pages.
