Measure AI search and SEO in three separate layers: visibility, website activity and business enquiries. Each answers a different question. A citation is not a visit, and a visit is not a qualified lead. Keeping those distinctions clear makes reports more useful.
Define a worthwhile enquiry first
Write down what makes an enquiry relevant to your business. For a website project, that might include a real business, a service you offer, a suitable customer area and a clear need. Do not count spam, job applications or test submissions as new sales opportunities.
A company serving Oakland County may receive enquiries from Pontiac, Troy, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills and beyond. Record the customer’s stated service need and area when appropriate, rather than inferring everything from the location of a website visit.
Use a simple measurement sheet
- Visibility: impressions or citations reported by a named platform.
- Visits: sessions or visitors attributed by your analytics system.
- Enquiries: actual calls, forms or other contact requests received.
- Qualified enquiries: contacts that fit your services and requirements.
- Outcomes: estimates, accepted projects or other confirmed next steps.
Include the reporting period and source beside every number. Do not add overlapping reports together as if they represent separate people. A customer may research in an AI tool, return through ordinary search and call later.
Verify form tracking against real submissions
A button click is not proof that a form succeeded. Check the complete path: validation, CAPTCHA where applicable, successful submission, stored record and notification delivery. Use a clearly labeled test and exclude it from the business report.
Google Analytics provides a recommended generate_lead event for a request for information. See its recommended events documentation. The event still needs to represent the correct action on your website; naming an event does not verify the implementation.
Read AI referral data with care
Some visits can be identified through referral information or campaign parameters. Review those identifiable visits, but retain an “unknown” category when the source is not reliable. Do not relabel all direct traffic as AI traffic.
An optional “How did you hear about us?” question can add context. Treat the answer as self-reported information, not a perfect attribution model. Customers may remember the last place they saw the business rather than the first.
Compare periods that make sense
A single week can be distorted by a holiday, seasonal demand or one unusually large project. Compare meaningful periods and note major website, advertising and business changes. For a small business with few monthly enquiries, individual lead quality may be more informative than a volatile percentage.
Use a change log. If you update service pages and launch ads at the same time, do not attribute every new enquiry to SEO. Record what happened, inspect the available evidence and explain what remains uncertain.
Turn the report into the next decision
If visibility rises but few visitors contact you, review the offer, service fit and enquiry path. If enquiries rise but most are unsuitable, clarify the service scope and customer area. If useful pages are not being discovered, investigate indexing and internal links before assuming more content is the answer.
